Yes, the Pharisees very often challenged Jesus and they tried to trap Him in stuff.
But I soooooooo love the fact that Jesus didn’t just sit back and take it, He would very much intentionally mess with the heads of the Pharisees. Things like being in the home of a Pharisee ON the sabbath and asking if it’s cool to heal the sick ON the sabbath. Then Jesus scopes the room and heals a guy right there in the middle of the Pharisee’s house.
Or when Jesus is invited out to lunch with a group of Pharisees and on purpose doesn’t wash His hands first before He eats ... just only to dig at the crazed group how unclean their hearts were.
But this is my favorite.
Jesus heals the leper and has the guy give the Pharisees the sacrificial stuff Moses said they needed to do in order to be made whole. Yes. The guy was already 100% whole - but hadn’t made any required sacrifices yet.
Then Jesus ordered him, “Don’t tell anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.” Luke 5:14
We don’t make sacrifices to be made whole, we ARE the living sacrifice and it’s our joy to love others unto wholeness even when we have battles raging in our own lives.
Folks. If you really want to mess with someone’s head - love them when they don’t deserve it. Heal them when you aren’t yet whole. Feed them when you can hardly feed yourself.
It takes love, to teach love.
